Boat History and Details
Coconuts floating houseboat is a lovingly custom designed Florida Bay Coaster. The boat company, was Founded by Jay Benford in 1969. Coconuts was designed and completed in the late 1990’s.
Originally outfitted for a couple of writers who enjoyed the peace and quiet of a live-aboard lifestyle in order to work independently, miles away from a boring office environment.
Acquired in 2007 by the current owner, Coconuts has since been operating as one of a fleet of floating vacation rental properties for Sleep-A-Float - the company my husband Andy Chason and myself, founded and operated from 2006-2013.
Coconuts is spacious, 50’ from bow to stern boasting a 16+foot beam. She’s a steel mono-hull gal, who rarely rocks and rolls even in Florida’s often dramatic weather and she’s proven herself mighty seaworthy even in hurricane force winds!
The interior design was intended to be a low maintenance simple plan, using contemporary IKEA cabinetry and storage. There is a ton of space for a boat! Two heads with standing showers, a dishwasher, and 3 bedroom areas including a queen size sleep sofa. A restful aft deck and a huge roof deck, a comfortable main salon, and stairs to upper salons and decks.
NOTE: This is NOT a craft for anyone with physical challenges, but easy for all others to navigate.
She Sleeps Afloat
Cool and Calm
Years back, we realized we were never going to resume ‘cruising’ with Coconuts, instead we decided to shut down the inboard Volvo Penta engine and seal up the bilge area to make her a permanent floating home. An upgraded high volume residential air conditioning unit was installed so that she is cool and comfortable with less carbon imprint year round.
If we ever wish to recharge her engines, it would require some work and expense, but she is definitely able and seaworthy. The pilot house remains in tact.
